What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors are consistently surprised by the high quality and extensive nature of the Spanish Gallery, often calling it a 'hidden gem.' The collection of Spanish Masters, sculptures, and thoughtful exhibitions are frequently praised, with many recommending ample time to explore. Some find the focus on religious art specific, but overall, it's considered a significant cultural asset to the region.
"A Hidden Gem.
I didn't really expect much of this gallery but my, was I surprised.
As I didn't expect a great deal I left visiting the gallery until the end of my day in Bishop Auckland and only arrived ~40 minutes before closing - this was a mistake.
I should have given it a good few hours to walk round and savour all the very well displayed range of artworks.
If you like art then this is a must visit in which you would be well advised to allow at least a couple of hours, maybe more, to enjoy the Art on display.
I would also recommend the purchase of the very well illustrated book "The Spanish Gallery" which is well worth the money."

"Impressive gallery with a wide range of original Spanish Masters (Velázquez, Murillo etc), not just paintings but wooden sculptures and carvings. Also some excellent Dutch and Italian works. Some of the works on the top floor are (very high quality) reproductions.
Not what you expect to find in a small County Durham town... The attendants are well-informed and happy to provide information if requested. Definitely worth a visit!
Buy all-site tickets online for a small discount - plus the tickets last for 12 months!"

There are 4 floors and it took my hubby & I 2 & half hours. We were in awe.
Definitely will be back.
There is a lift to all floors, as a wheelchair ♿️ user is brilliant.
The staff were absolutely brilliant and knowledgeable & answered any questions we had, Gill and Jeremy especially.
There is a cafe but did not go in this time.
Toilets.
The cost is £12.95 entrance but carer goes in free, you need to show proof.
Again, an absolute wow factor.
