"What an amazing experience!!! My family and I drove 3 hours to go fossil hunting. We found a lot of shark teeth and some other really cool stuff in just a few hours! I would highly recommend Brownville park. They also have a campground at the same location that is very affordable! Next time we will definitely camp for a few days"

Jeremy Tellier

"A little rustic and a little out of the way.
However,
For the monitored $2 fee, you can stay for a day. There are showers and ok restrooms
Plenty of parking for those launching a kayak. Just don't block the road to the hiking trails
The hiking trails are about a mile long and very easy, but it is a day out in the woods
If you paddle here be sure to plan for a significant current
We went up stream for the start and paddled back in half the time with wind and water in our favor.
Even though it's a bit of a ride from punta Gorda or Port Charlotte, I cannot wait to get back.
Lots of birds and even a few alligators make it even more interesting"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Thrill of Fossil Hunting

Peace River is renowned for its fossil-rich deposits, making Brownville Park a prime spot for amateur paleontologists. The primary draw is the abundance of shark teeth, with many visitors hoping to unearth a Megalodon tooth. The river's currents constantly churn up ancient sediment, revealing treasures from prehistoric times. Even if you don't find a massive tooth, discovering smaller shark teeth, fossilized shells, or other marine remnants is incredibly rewarding. Reddit+1

To maximize your chances, timing is crucial. Fossil hunting is often best after heavy rains, as the increased water flow can expose new finds along the riverbanks. Bringing a fossil sieve is highly recommended for sifting through the gravel and sand to uncover smaller specimens that might otherwise be missed. Remember to wear sturdy footwear, as you'll likely be walking in and around the shallow riverbed. Reddit

Beyond shark teeth, the riverbed can yield other interesting artifacts. Visitors have reported finding fossilized bones, ancient coral, and even prehistoric plant matter. It's a fascinating glimpse into Florida's ancient past, and the thrill of discovery makes it an unforgettable experience for all ages. Reddit
