Once upon a time, this lighthouse sat on an island — Sand Island, they called it. The lighthouse, originally built on the edge of a shoal between Fort Morgan and Dauphin Island, received sand naturally until the beginning of routine dredging of the Mobile Ship Channel. The last one hundred years of bay dredging robbed the island of its regular sand supply by interrupting the organic sand delive...

Fun little fact: This is the "Low Lighthouse", that operates in tandem with the "High Lighthouse" the other end of the island. For a ship to be on the correct, safe course through Hoy Sound, they must line up the two lights so that the light from the "Low" tower appears directly beneath the light from the "High" tower. If the lights are misaligned, the ship is off course and risks hitting hidden r...

Reviews Summary

Visitors appreciate the Ship Island Lighthouse replica as a charming landmark in Gulfport Harbor, especially when the park is lit for the holidays. The historical significance of the original lighthouse and Ship Island is a key draw, with many enjoying the ferry trip and the island's beaches. However, the intense heat of the sand on Ship Island and the long walk from the ferry are frequently mentioned drawbacks.

"This structure was built in 2011 I believe and is a replica of an earlier replica that was destroyed by hurricane Katrina. There is a nearby, as in almost right under it, historical marker that gives information on the lighthouse as well as Ship Island where it was situated.

The marker reads:

12 miles south of the mainland lies emerald waters and sugar white sand. Site of economic and military conquest by the Spanish in the 1500s and the French in 1699, the British in the 1700s, and the Union Army in 1861. Site of Civil War Fort Massachusetts and quarantine station (1880-1916). British headquarters for the Battle of New Orleans during the War of 1812. A brick lighthouse was built in 1853 and destroyed in 1886. The wooden lighthouse was built in 1886, survived Hurricane Camille in 1969, burned by a campfire in 1972, and reconstructed in 1999. Southern terminus for the Gulfport shipping channel. Became part of Gulf National Seashore in 1971."

"The walk from the Ferry to the beach is across the island. It is paved, but it's long and once you get to the sand, it is impossible to roll your cooler on the sand. The sand is extremely hot, like burn the bottom of your feet hot. So make sure, you have water shoes on or decent sandals."
