When the USS Texas was commissioned in 1914, she was considered the most powerful battleship in the world. For years after she was decommissioned, she was docked at San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site, where she slowly deteriorated. In the end, she was leaking 1,500 gallons of mucky water a minute. Last August, she was moved to Galveston, where she’s in dry dock getting repairs. Through J...

Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site for its historical significance and the impressive San Jacinto Monument, offering great views from its observation deck. Many appreciate the scenic park grounds for exploration and wildlife spotting. However, some note that the museum's operating hours can be inconsistent, and occasional construction may affect parts of the site.

"We had been here before with our kids at least a decade earlier. They have a good sized exhibit in the base and part of the admission fee includes a ride to the top of the monument. It is really neat to see the surrounding bay from the top. I am uncomfortable with heights but wasn’t bothered by this here as the observation area is completely enclosed. I don’t know how busy it gets as we went in on a Friday morning.

Overall it was an enjoyable experience."

"I have wanted to go visit this monument for many years! It was great. Awesome views. Great movie that tells the story. Stay in SW Houston when working there and it was a short 20/25 minute drive. So glad I went."

Michael Skinner

"The battleground was a fun time. We stopped here and ran around the park seeing many birds, turtles, and other things. The actual museum was closed during our visit, however we could still walk around the outside and the rest of the park. They are currently doing some construction/updating to part of the park, so there should be some extra things to view in the coming months.

I assume this might be from the lack of being "open" but the bathroom, which is open without a door, was accompanied by a massive wolf spider roughly the size of an adult's fist and large frog in the paper towel dispenser where the towels should be. Anyhow, the battleground is very scenic and beautiful, just keep your eyes open on the bathrooms if you use them."
