Marten de Roon has spent the bulk of his career at Atalanta, becoming one of Serie A's most reliable defensive midfielders across nearly a decade in Bergamo. A brief, unhappy loan to Middlesbrough aside, he has been central to Atalanta's transformation under Gian Piero Gasperini into a European force. At 35 he is the oldest midfielder in this Dutch squad and offers something the younger options cannot — positional discipline and the willingness to do unglamorous work. He is not a regular starter for the Netherlands but provides experienced cover in a midfield with considerable depth.
