A sacred mountain where the Oshu Fujiwara clan built a sutra mound on its summit

World Heritage Site, Historic Site, Scenic Spot

Located roughly halfway between Chusonji Temple and Motsuji Temple, this sacred mountain was the standard for the spatial design of the city of Hiraizumi.
There is a legend that Hidehira, the third head of the Oshu Fujiwara clan, had it built in one night on the west side of Muryoko-in Temple, which was modeled after Byodo-in Temple in Uji.
It is 98.6m above sea level and is said to have been named after the pair of golden roosters buried on the summit.
When the area near the summit was robbed in 1930 in search of the legendary golden rooster, copper sutra tubes and ceramic jars and pots indicating that it was a sutra mound were unearthed.
At the foot of the mountain are the Senjudo Hall, which houses the memorial tablets of the three Fujiwara clan generations and a wooden statue of Hidehira, a five-ringed tower said to be the grave of Minamoto no Yoshitsune's wife and child, the Hiraizumi Cultural Heritage Center, and the ruins of Hanadate Temple.

An important mountain that forms the core of Hiraizumi.

Its altitude is very low, so you can reach the summit quickly.

"I decided on my own theme of "A journey following in Basho's footsteps" and visited Mt. Kinkei, a sacred mountain and symbol of Hiraizumi culture, on May 21, 2023. I was hoping for a view from the summit, but it was a quiet place covered in dense trees. I heard from locals that local elementary school students visit on field trips and the like, and they said, "I'd love to go again..." It's a steep slope, so it's best to avoid it if you have weak legs or on a rainy day to prevent injury."
