Went wine tasting @adegaregionaldecolares in Colares, Portugal. The region is the smallest still wine producing region in Portugal. And they are known for their rare sand wine, produced from grape grown in sand and close to the ground, instead of soil and staked high. These wines have a saltiness from the sea and a really interesting flavor, especially their white wine. We really enjoyed learn...

Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the unique history and distinct flavors of Colares wines, often describing the experience as educational and memorable. The sandy soil and sea influence create wines unlike any other. However, some visitors have encountered issues with service if they haven't booked in advance, and the cost can be a consideration.

"Had an amazing tour today, so interesting. Not only did we see and hear the history of the barrels and about the production process, we were also able to see behind the scenes. We tried two wines, a white and a red, which were accompanied by meat and cheese tapas. Highly recommend. It is essential to book in advance."

Niki

"Very nice winery where you can learn a lot about the history of Colares wines. Interesting for amateurs and wine professionals. The wines are really different due to sandy soils and sea influence. If possible, try to buy a few bottles because they are hard to get outside Portugal. Book a tour and tasting in advance so they can make time for you. Not cheap, but worth it!"

Chef on Holiday

"When we arrived we said we were looking to have some wine, the gentleman welcomed us in and said we could walk around. We checked out the barrels real quick. Once we walked to the counter the women refused service stating we needed a reservation for a tasting - the whole place had like 2 people in it. I asked about having just a glass, but apparently they do not have a liquor license for that."

📸 📸 Photography

Capture the rustic charm of the wineries, the unique sandy vineyards, and the coastal landscapes. The traditional wooden vats and cellars also make for great shots. Instagram+1

Photography is generally allowed inside the wineries during tours, but it's always polite to ask your guide if you're unsure, especially in sensitive areas like cellars. Instagram

The 'golden hours' around sunrise and sunset offer beautiful light for vineyard and coastal shots. Midday can be harsh, but good for capturing details inside the shaded cellars. Instagram

Look for elevated spots overlooking the vineyards, especially those with the Atlantic Ocean in the background. The drive along the coast offers several pull-offs for scenic views. Instagram

A versatile lens (like a 24-70mm) is great for both landscapes and cellar details. A wide-angle lens can capture the expanse of the vineyards, and a prime lens is good for low-light interior shots. Instagram
