Shenandoah National Park

Has anyone hiked the 100 miles AT section of Shenandoah National Park in VA? A friend and I are considering this at the end of May. Hiking Sunday to Sunday. Some concerns we have is permits, shuttle service, weather, COVID.

Front Royal to Harpers Ferry/VA AT section hikes

As someone who just wants to get on trail for a 5-day segment, I picked this section for accessibility reasons (I live in DC so getting to front royal and from harpers ferry using union station is easy). However, I noticed the bubble is crowding up near this area and especially…

Reviews Summary

Visitors appreciate the Appalachian Trail's accessibility from the US 522 crossing and the dedicated maintenance by local volunteers. The challenging climb to Shenandoah National Park and the peaceful forest sections are highlights. However, initial sections near traffic and the potential for downed trees after storms are noted drawbacks.

"I love living in Virginia and having easy access to the Appalachian Trail. I hiked northbound from the junction just after several storms.

There were lots of downed trees (unfortunately some old growth trees). I was able to climb over all of them. And I encountered some heroes clearing a lot of the debris.

This part of the trail is not my favorite because for the first 3/4 mile you see a lot of fencing for the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute. But after a mile you escape the sound of traffic and are able to enjoy the silence of the woods."

"Having backpacked a couple hundred miles of the AT, I always stop to visit trail crossings, and if time allows, walk some of the trail. That was the case during this road trip to visit my mother far to the south in Florida. Lovely little crossing that the local volunteers take a lot of pride and hard work in keeping maintained. My daughter, who is a complete city kid asked: "why don't they have these nice wooden walkways covering the entire trail?"..."

"Front Royal, Virginia: This is an enjoyable 8.0 mile hike out and back from the U.S. Route 522 Appalachian Trail junction. It runs 4.0 miles south (bordering the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute) to the Shenandoah National Park northern boundary (SNB). This hike is mostly up hill with a 1948' elevation change. As you near the SNB you're greeted to a .5 mile 300' rock climb to reach the SNB at the top of the mountain. It's approximately 2.5 hours out and 1.5 hours back (downhill). Allow for a total of 4 hours. A beautiful and tranquil walk in the woods while fording several small streams. (see pics)"
