MetLife Stadium
About
MetLife Stadium is a massive 82,500-seat open-air venue in the New Jersey Meadowlands, home to both the Giants and Jets. World Cup crowds will be electric; expect a cauldron atmosphere amplified by international fans, though the stadium itself is corporate and modern rather than intimate.
History
Opened in 2010, MetLife replaced the old Giants Stadium on the same Meadowlands Sports Complex site. It hosted Super Bowl XLVIII in 2014 — the first outdoor cold-weather Super Bowl — and is set to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final, its biggest event to date.
Getting there
Take NJ Route 3 or I-95 to the Meadowlands. On-site lots (Blue, Red, Yellow) cost $40–$60+; pre-purchase is essential. Expect severe gridlock post-match — budget 60–90 minutes to exit. Carpooling to outer lots saves money but not time.
Uber/Lyft designated pick-up is in the Yellow Lot rideshare zone. Post-match surges routinely hit 3–5× base fare. Pre-scheduling or walking to Secaucus Junction first dramatically cuts costs. Drop-off is smoother; allow extra time for pick-up queues.
Take NJ Transit from Penn Station (NYC) on the Meadowlands Rail Line — a direct game-day-only service stopping at Meadowlands Station, a short walk to the gates. Journey is roughly 20 minutes; trains run frequently pre- and post-match. Best option by far.
Where to stay
Most fans base themselves in Midtown Manhattan or Jersey City. Midtown offers iconic NYC energy near Times Square and Penn Station; Jersey City's Newport and Grove Street neighbourhoods are cheaper, calmer, and quicker to the stadium via the NJ Transit rail corridor.
