About Paraguay

Paraguay national team

Paraguay have qualified for ten World Cups without ever lifting the trophy, but their 2010 campaign in South Africa remains their finest hour — reaching the quarter-finals before losing to Spain, the eventual champions. José Luis Chilavert, the goalscoring goalkeeper, defined an era in the 1990s, while Roque Santa Cruz and Salvador Cabañas carried the attack into the 2000s. The Albirroja have also won the Copa América twice, in 1953 and 1979, and enter 2026 hoping to recapture that quarter-final pedigree.

Players to watch

How they play

Alfaro typically lines up in a 4-2-3-1, with Andrés Cubas and Damián Bobadilla forming a disciplined double pivot that shields the back four. Almirón operates as the advanced ten or right midfielder, pressing high and linking play. Build-up is direct rather than elaborate — Paraguay look to win the ball back quickly and transition through Almirón or wide runners like Ramón Sosa before the opposition can reset.

Players to watch

The engine of Paraguay's attack runs through Miguel Almirón, whose relentless pressing and late runs into the box made him an MLS icon at Atlanta United after years terrorising Premier League defences at Newcastle. Julio Enciso brings the unpredictability — a low centre of gravity, sudden acceleration, and the kind of audacious long-range strikes that lit up Brighton before his move to Strasbourg. Diego Gómez, still developing at Brighton, offers progressive passing and the composure to dictate tempo from deep.

Strengths

Paraguay's defensive block, anchored by the experienced Gustavo Gómez at Palmeiras and the combative Fabián Balbuena, is genuinely difficult to break down. Almirón's pressing intensity sets the tone for the whole team, and Enciso's ability to produce a moment of individual brilliance can unlock any defence from nothing.

Weaknesses

The forward line beyond Enciso is thin on top-level European experience — Antonio Sanabria is at Cremonese in Serie B, and Gabriel Ávalos and Alex Arce are untested at this level. Paraguay also lack a genuine creative playmaker who can unlock deep defences through combination play when direct transitions are neutralised.

The lines

Attack

Enciso is the most dangerous forward, capable of the spectacular, while Sanabria offers a physical target option. Almirón effectively functions as a second attacker, arriving late into the box. Isidro Pitta and Gustavo Caballero provide depth but are unproven at World Cup level.

Midfield

Cubas and Bobadilla provide the defensive foundation, winning duels and recycling possession without flair. Diego Gómez adds progressive carrying and forward passing from a box-to-box role. Almirón is the creative spark above them, while Ramón Sosa — a consistent performer at Palmeiras — offers width and direct running.

Defence

Gustavo Gómez is the defensive leader, a Copa Libertadores winner with Palmeiras and a commanding aerial presence. Júnior Alonso partners him, also seasoned in Brazilian football. Omar Alderete and Fabián Balbuena provide experienced cover, though the full-back positions — occupied by Juan Caceres and Alexandro Maidana — are less battle-hardened.

Goalkeeper

Roberto Fernández of Cerro Porteño is the expected first choice, a reliable domestic-level keeper whose shot-stopping is sound but whose experience of high-pressure international football remains limited. Gastón Olveira at Olimpia provides cover, but neither commands the position with the authority of a Chilavert.
