About Türkiye

Türkiye national team

Turkey's finest World Cup hour came in 2002 in South Korea and Japan, where they finished third — their only podium finish — with Hakan Şükür scoring the fastest goal in World Cup history just eleven seconds into the third-place play-off against South Korea. Rüştü Reçber was outstanding in goal throughout that run. They qualified sporadically after that, missing several tournaments entirely, but the emergence of Arda Guler and Kenan Yildiz signals a genuine generational renewal heading into 2026.

Türkiye are out of the World Cup

Türkiye did not advance from the group stage, so there is no knockout path to project.

Players to watch

How they play

Montella deploys a 4-2-3-1 in which Hakan Calhanoglu and Salih Ozcan or Kaan Ayhan form a double pivot, shielding the defence while recycling possession. Arda Guler operates as the ten, with Kerem Akturkoglu and Kenan Yildiz providing width. Ferdi Kadioglu pushes forward aggressively from left-back, effectively creating a 3-4-3 shape in possession. Turkey press in mid-block and look to transition quickly through Guler's line-breaking passes.

Players to watch

The eye inevitably goes to Arda Guler first — Real Madrid's teenage magician whose dribbling and left-footed delivery in tight spaces make him the most technically gifted player Turkey has produced in a generation. Hakan Calhanoglu is the engine underneath him, Inter Milan's deep-lying playmaker who dictates tempo and strikes from distance with genuine menace. Kerem Akturkoglu provides the direct, high-speed width that stretches defences and creates the space those two exploit.

Strengths

Hakan Calhanoglu's ability to control tempo and score from range gives Turkey a genuine match-winner in central areas. The combination of Arda Guler's creativity and Ferdi Kadioglu's overlapping runs down the left creates a consistently dangerous corridor that top defences struggle to contain.

Weaknesses

Merih Demiral and Caglar Soyuncu are experienced but neither is playing at the very highest club level, leaving the central defence exposed against elite pace. Turkey's squad depth in central midfield is also thin — if Calhanoglu is suspended or injured, Orkun Kokcu and Ismail Yuksek are significant steps down in quality.

The lines

Attack

Arda Guler is the creative fulcrum, capable of unlocking any defence with his dribbling and passing. Kerem Akturkoglu provides direct pace and pressing energy on the right, while Kenan Yildiz — Juventus's versatile young forward — offers an intelligent alternative capable of playing across the front line.

Midfield

Hakan Calhanoglu anchors the unit as a deep-lying playmaker, reading the game and distributing with Inter Milan-level precision. Salih Ozcan provides the defensive cover and pressing intensity alongside him, while Orkun Kokcu offers a more technical, progressive option off the bench when Turkey need to break down a low block.

Defence

Ferdi Kadioglu's attacking intelligence from left-back is Turkey's most dynamic defensive asset. Merih Demiral leads the centre-back pairing with physicality and aerial presence, partnered by Abdulkerim Bardakci or Caglar Soyuncu. Zeki Celik provides reliable cover at right-back, though the unit as a whole can be stretched by quick transitions.

Goalkeeper

Ugurcan Cakir is the expected first choice, experienced at Galatasaray and a consistent performer for the national team over several years. Altay Bayindir at Manchester United and Mert Gunok at Fenerbahce provide genuine competition, making this a more settled position than it has historically been for Turkey.
